Happy Tips for a Healthy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a time of togetherness and gratitude. - Nigel Hamilton

Each year, American families come together to celebrate Thanksgiving. But what does Thanksgiving mean to you?

To me, Thanksgiving is all about relationships. It’s about family and friends coming together to express gratitude and give thanks for our blessings, it’s a time for healing and sharing our happiness.

But of course, this also means feasting!

You’ll enjoy a sumptuous dinner, a smorgasbord of roasted turkey, fruits and vegetables, pumpkin pie, and other delightful trimmings. It’s indeed, a day to enjoy a veritable feast!

That doesn’t mean, however, that we’re just going to allow ourselves to forget about our efforts to stay healthy. You can enjoy our luscious Thanksgiving, but still be able to control weight gain and slide back to your normal eating pattern after the holiday!

Sounds good?

Well, let’s talk about 5 tips that will help keep your Thanksgiving happy and healthy!

1. Sit up straight while eating.

Sitting up straight should help you breathe properly, which will then support proper digestion. It also makes you more aware and conscious of what you’re eating (and therefore avoid overeating!).

2. Use a smaller plate.

Smaller than normal, I mean. Believe it or not, using a smaller plate affects food consumption. It’s simple. The bigger the plate, the more food you heap on it. Ergo, the more food you consume. Moderation is the key.

3. Balance your meal.

At the very least, one-third of your meal should comprise of fruits and vegetables. This will help you to contain your appetite, while still getting the nutrients you need.

4. Eat wisely.

Save your calorie-intake for the main Thanksgiving meal. Since you’re going to consume calories anyway, pick the dishes you really want or find particularly tasty. Be judicious about eating fat, decrease carbohydrate intake, and put more focus on having lean protein.

5. Exercise moderately.

A brief jog, a short walk with family, can all be part of your Thanksgiving. The beauty of staying healthy is that you can do it with your family and friends. Good health, after all, is something to be thankful for!
