Top 5 Home Remedies For Digestive Problems
January 31, 2020
When I was a kid (believe me, that was a really long time ago!), my mom used to have this book of herbal remedies for practically everything! And while modern medicine has progressed by leaps and bounds, I still do find myself often opting for natural remedies—especially for minor digestive problems that occur often enough for me!
So today, I thought I’d share with you some of the most commonly used natural remedies to treat digestive issues. I hope you find this useful!
Ginger
Oh yes, Ginger has been quite popular these past years despite its pungent odor and flavor. Popularly known for helping relieve nausea, ginger tea has been used by a number of cancer patients to alleviate nausea and vomiting as a result of chemotherapy. It also produces a calming effect and helps you relax after a hectic day.
Turmeric
With curcumin as an active component, turmeric has been known to assist digestion and enhance liver function, among others. In fact, the World Health Organization recommends curcumin for the treatment of acid reflux, atonic dyspepsia, and flatulence (oops!).
It’s important to note, however, that while turmeric may work well for some people, it may not be good for those with gallbladder issues or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It’s recommended that those scheduled for surgery discontinue using turmeric at least two weeks in advance as it may slow blood clotting.
Pineapple / Pineapple Extract
Pineapple contains digestive enzymes, used to treat indigestion and heartburn. So if you’re suffering from an upset stomach, try eating pineapple or drinking pineapple extract.
Milk Thistle
Milk thistle is recommended for people with sluggish metabolism and digestion. It’s been known to help keep liver cells healthy. A word of caution for those who may be hypoglycemic, as milk thistle can lower blood sugar, as well.
Probiotics
Probiotics are well-known for helping regulate digestion. Because there are so many different probiotic products in the market today, make sure you are choosing the right type of probiotic for you.
