6 WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR KIDS FROM THE CORONAVIRUS

April 9, 2020

While adults have been found to make up majority of the known cases of COVID-19 to date and available evidence suggests children are at lower risk for the virus in comparison to adults, that doesn’t mean children can’t get infected. In fact, several young children have already been reported to get sick with the virus.

Here are some steps to help protect you and your children from COVID-19:

Wash hands often

Washing your kids hands

Teach your children to practice preventive behaviors every day. These include frequently washing their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not on hand, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer. This is very important if you or your children have been in a public place. Make sure all members of the family do the same thing.

Regularly sanitize and disinfect surfaces that are often touched

Sanitize surfaces

With a cleaning agent, disinfect your common areas at home, specifically doorknobs, tables, chairs, light switches, phones, toilets, remote controls, handles, sinks—and even toys!

Practice physical distancing

Social distance to protect your kids

A huge contributor to slowing or minimizing the spread of the virus is to reduce (if not eliminate) contact with it as best you can. If children have to go out, it is important that they keep at least a distance of 1-2 meters from other people who are not members of their household. Stay away from people who may be sick (i.e. sneezing or coughing). You may also want to limit their time with older adults, along with people who have serious medical conditions.

Your children can maintain social connections through supervised video or phone calls with their friends, and the use of social media.

Launder clothes using the warmest setting

Do Laundry on hot

As much as possible, launder clothes and other items using the warmest settings, and dry them completely. If you can, wash plush toys the same way as well.

Teach your kids to follow the preventive measures

Teach your kids

Teach your children to regularly wash their hands and explain how it can keep them safe and healthy, and keep the virus from spreading. All the adults at home should consistently set a good example! If the adults are washing their hands often, the kids are likely to do the same.

Watch out for any signs of illness

 Symptoms of the Coronavirus

If you see any sign of cough, fever, shortness of breath, or any symptom that may be consistent with COVID-19 (see here), immediately contact your healthcare provider. Make sure you keep your child at home and away from others. Remember that children may have symptoms that are milder than those noted in adults.

In these uncertain times, parents need to take extra steps to protect their children and others from getting sick. Let’s all keep our children safe and help prevent the spread of COVID-19!
